 Corner House Nursery

Come on in to learn and play with love and laughter all the way

Education
A child's early years are the building blocks of life. We believe that home is the first school and parents are the first teachers. We recognize and value the contribution that parents make to their child's learning and encourage them to be involved in their nursery education. Our youngest children learn from experiencing a wide variety of interesting and exciting play opportunities, both indoors and outdoors, planned by trained and experienced staff. As they get older the learning experiences  become more structured and children will experience more group opportunities developing their understanding of friendship, co operation, sharing and fair play . Our curriculum is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage Document "Every Child Matters", produced by the department for Education and Skills.

 Healthy Eating
Promoting healthy eating habits among young children is important if they are to follow a healthy lifestyle as they grow and develop.
At Corner House Nursery, we provide nutritious, well-balanced meals and snacks every day. Meal times are relaxed social occasions when children can enjoy eating healthy food, learning good manners and making conversation with adults and other children.

Our food is prepared fresh daily by a skilled cook.  All weekly menus are well-balanced and include fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and pasta, with a suitable vegetarian alternative provided, if required.  For children following a special diet, we will prepare a special menu to suit their needs.  At meal times and snack times, children will be involved by helping to clean and set the tables. Sometimes, they will be able to prepare some of the food, baking cakes and biscuits or making sandwiches.

Outdoor Play
Physical activity is vital to a child's development and outdoor play is another element in encouraging a healthy lifestyle. Corner House Nursery has created four beautiful and exciting outdoor play areas.
                * The garden, complete with a meadow to grow wild flowers. We pic nic on the lawn and play games here.
                * The yard where we learn to pedal a bike and drive a car. Theres a sand pit and a play house too.
                 * The nature garden where we learn about plants, insects and birds. We can plant seeds and watch them grow.
                  * The adventure play ground with a log cabin, stepping stones, slide and a wobbly bridge, for jumping balancing and climbing on.

Special Needs
We welcome children with special needs. The nursery is situated mainly on the ground floor and there is wheelchair access to most areas. The nursery has a special educational needs co ordinator (SENco) who has training and experience, she will work with parents to ensure that the nursery is able to meet the child's needs.

Staffing Ratio

As recommended by National Day Care Standards, Corner House Nursery maintains a high ratio of staff to children.

  • 6 months to 2 years old  – 1 adult to 3 children
  • 2 years to 3 years old    – 1 adult to 4 children
  • 3 years to 5 years old    – 1 adult to 8 children

At Corner House, it is our policy to employ extra staff who will cover for illness/holidays and over staff lunch and break times. Therefore, the adult to child ratio is often higher than those stated above. National Day Care Standards also recommend that at least 50% of the nursery staff should hold a level 2 qualification in child care and education. At Corner House, 80% of our nursery staff are Nursery Officers with a level 3 qualification in child care and education and significant experience. Our Nursery Assistants have a level 2 qualification and are all training to wards a level 3 standard. This level of training and experience far exceeds the recommended guidelines.

Safety and Security
The safety of your child is our first priority at all times. The nursery entrance is kept locked at all times and is guarded with a surveylance monitor and maned entry system.  Anyone collecting a child will be subject to strict security checks to ensure their identity. Approx 90% of our staff have a current first aid certificate and we have up to date policies covering health and safety and child protection.
